Improper Decorum of Rhylan Rowe

Candidate for Council Rhylan Rowe invokes racial slurs with rap music.

02/14/2020 – Trophy Club, TX

Candidate for Town Council Rhylan Rowe, who resigned abruptly in 2019 and is currently running to be put back on the town council in the May 2, 2020 election, has been found quoting racially charged music lyrics on his Twitter feed.

For months, Mr. Rowe has had the following quote as his byline on his twitter feed at @rhylanrowe.

“ I am the one-man army, Ason / I never been token out / I keep MCs lookin’ out “

We decided to look into the rather unusual quote (for a Councilman) and discovered that the line is taken from a song called, “Ol’ Dirty Bastard” by Brooklyn Zoo!

The song is littered with a remarkable quantity of F-word and N-word usage. Below is a link to the music video and a sample of the lyrics (Redacted as appropriate for G-rating).

Lyrics to “Ol’ Dirty Bastard”

I’m the one-man army, Ason
I never been tooken out, I keep MC’s looking out
I drop science like Cosby dropping babies
Enough to make a nig## go crazy

Nig### catching headaches, what? What? You need Aspirin?
This type of pain, you couldn’t even kill with Midol
Fuc# around, get sprayed with Lysol
In your face like a can of mace, baby
Is it burning? Well, fuc# it, now you’re learning
How I don’t even like your motherfu##ing profile
Give me my fuc#ing shit blaow
Not seen and heard, no-one knows
You forget nig### be quiet as kept

We reached out to Mr. Rowe for comment and an explanation as to why this particular quote was referenced.

Mr. Rowe stated, “No real reason. I like the song. A blurb in a twitter bio is similar to deciding which shirt to wear in the morning. I think it used to say, “bacon is good for me.””

He went on to say, “It’s a great song. I’m a hip hop fan. I like Wu Tang.”

A “great song”? Really? When we asked Mr. Rowe if he would play that song around his kids he became defensive, stating, “…let’s not wade into a parenting discussion.”

Why not?

If Mr. Rowe desires to regain his seat on the Town Council we feel that the citizens of the town deserve to know what kind of person he is. It may seem like a minor thing to discuss one’s taste in music but when that person chooses to listen to music riddled with racist lyrics, (prolific use of the N-word), F-bombs, violence, drugs, glorification of cop-killers etc., it becomes very relevant as it applies to the character of the candidate. It’s not a trivial thing.

Of course, how Mr. Rowe raises his own kids is his business … but as a representative of the town he has influence on all the children of Trophy Club. He is supposed to be a role model for our children. “Character” is very much in the interest of the people of Trophy Club.

Mr. Rowe was initially elected to the town council in a special election of November 2014 to fill a vacant seat. He was re-elected the following year and then again in 2018. All three times he ran unopposed. He abruptly resigned in January 2019 after a disagreement with Councilman Greg Lamont who at the time had only 4 months left on his term. Whereas Rowe had 2 years remaining on his term. Rowe has been somewhat vague and has never adequately explained his hasty departure.

This time around Mr. Rowe will not be able to coast into office. He is running against Greg Lamont head to head for the same seat (Place 1) in the May 2, 2020 election.

(Correction – We incorrectly conflated the song title with the artist. The artist is “Ol’ Dirty Bastard (ODB)”. The song is “Brooklyn Zoo!”)

(Update – Mr. Rowe has changed his tagline since first publication. His Twitter account is now ‘private’.)
